On this day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation which set the date for the freedom of over 3 million slaves in the United States. Then on January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the official Proclamation which officially freed the slaves. Obviously we all know how important that document was, and we all like our freedoms.
